With his white linen shirt and golden tan, Casey is beginning to resemble a character from MIchael Ondaatje's "The English Patient". This shot features an Iranian restaurant owner giving Casey a mini-lesson on the hookah. Though last night's meal at this gentleman's restaurant was a bit of a bait and switch act. Bollywood videos and signs promising "roti boom" drew us in to the streetside cafe, but the real specialty was Persian food (no roti boom) and the owner's charisma. Yogurt with a bit of mint for me, and a bowl of Iranian stew (lentils and mutton) for Casey was just the way to end our time in Langkawi.
The 6-hour taxi-ferry-taxi-bus-ferry trip from Langkawi back to Penang helped us avoid the pricey 2 hour tourist ferry across the choppy waters of the Andaman Sea. But more interesting was the insight we gained into how different things feel up on the Thai border. Malaysia is a mostly Muslim nation, but up on near Kuala Perlis, you really feel a cultural shift. Surreal moment of the past 24 hours: Arab woman on a jet ski veiled completely in black (head, body, and face covered).

Without the text, the picture could have just captured the English patient making a bit for the two red motorcycles in the background and ready to smoke the peace pipe to seal the deal.
Really like to see the veiled jet skiers.
Very cool about the veiled jet skier! I always felt so bad for the women all covered up (in black no less) in that heat.
