Of course this post is by Casey. Here's an Asian-style toilet which I actually prefer to the European style raised seat. Since nothing comes into contact with the porcelain other than your shoes, this is a much more sanitary device for public use. I recall there were always stories in the Japanese newspapers about people injuring themselves from falling after balancing precariously on the seat of a European toilet as if it were a squat toilet. In general, we're not as civilized in the U.S. as we'd like to think - there's alot to learn from the rest of the world provided we keep our eyes open to see it. The airport experience in Korea and Malaysia has been so pleasant - lots of places to rest and put your feet up, sparkling clean restrooms and nice shops. Best of all, airport personnel treat you like a human rather than livestock. Perhaps this is because travel in these countries is still restricted to the wealthy few? Labor is probably so cheap that a higher standard of service is possible. Either way, we're feeling very pampered and have had amazingly good service on Korean Airlines and Malaysia Airlines and highly recommend them.

It was only a matter of time until Casey started analyzing bathroom etiquette... You may try to read there but I thought that the squat-style toilet is for the training of horse stand to be better at kung-fu.
