So the kitchen project is becoming increasingly complicated but the Engineer never seems to lose his positive attitude. Technically, we've outsourced the cabinet install, but realistically, Casey plans to spend another weekend adding the vent pipe, moving the electrical outlet for the fridge, and making serious adjustments to the drywall. There is some solace in knowing that when the revolution comes, at least one of us will know how to build a shelter and make paper out of cheap press-board so that the other one can write about the revolution.Am trying to include some photos to sh
ow you the work in progress. Shot #1 is of our "20th century Russian kitchen", which makes absolutely no historical sense as a moniker but that's its name and we're sticking to it. We love having simultaneous access to the fridge, microwave, and portable cook stove without ever having to move our bums off the chair. Shots #2 and 3 include views of the new maple cabinets. The cherry was a tempting choice, but we were fearful of anything mildly associated with tropical forests. The bamboo floors will be installed next week. We felt comfortable deforesting New England maple wood, given that we'd climbed many of those trees in childhood and we've chainsawed 9
5% of the virgin forests in the US anyway. (Seriously, though, we did check the source to market and the maple is kosher).These house projects have been ongoing for nearly 5 years, but we figured it was cheaper to dig in and establish roots, create a space that was ours, rather than tool around for something newer with a bloated mortgage. Plus, we'll now have more available funds to spend on chocolate, expensive vegetables, and of course, Kiwi. (Addendum: Is Casey not the most handsome man you've ever seen? Even in a frayed 15-year old Tina Turner concert t-shirt).

Oh, Karen. Love your humor! The kitchen is looking great! Maybe we'll see it in person someday...(The Fort Collins move talk was brought up again. Poor market=no move in the near future).
Maple and bamboo is also the combination we choose. wcc was so excited to see that bamboo becomes available as one of the flooring options. For Chinese, bamboo is a very important plant: bamboo shoots for food (always food first), leaf as good wrapping material, thinner bamboo offering the right touch as fishing pole (or my cursed spanking stick), and thicker ones as building material from water pipe, bridge, to wall and roof. The high frequency of its appearance in poems and paintings give bamboo the name as the scholar among plants. You can tell how excited wcc is now. He can't wait to see the coming progress of your kitchen. Keep reporting on the engineer work. No worry about paper, bamboo was the predecessor of paper for Chinese to write on (those old bamboo books were very heavy).
Thanks for all the comments, guys. Love the bamboo and maple combo, WCC. We decided to go with gray silestone counters though I like the ebony recommendation! Anything to help hide the trail of sticky, gooey chocolate we tend to leave behind in the wake of cooking and snacking. WCC, you should be a writer.
