The bid for the 2012 Olympics was really about Paris and London. As the campaign drew to a close, Paris was seen as the running favorite, until, some say, Jacques Chirac jokingly declared: "After Finland, (England) is the country with the worst food." Not surprisingly, Chirac’s comment was heavily politicized, but Tony Blair refused to bite back. Then, on July 6, the IOC made the decision to award London the games. Woo hoo!
Some speculate that Chirac’s comments threw England a few extra IOC votes. I think London sealed the deal with a spectacular presentation in the 11th hour. The celebration which ensued in Britain was nothing short of euphoric. The next day England responded to the Chirac food missive in its own typically English way: self-deprecation (see below). We love them for that. And for their fish and chips.
Yeah, we've got crap food, but we've also got the Olympics.
