You’ve probably heard the news. The sixth installment in the Harry Potter series came out last Friday at midnight, and the folks here in England have gone as mad as hatters on a shot of quicksilver. Book store employees at WH Smith were dressed up in purple cloaks and wizard hats when we happened upon the store Friday night. And everywhere you go – even ASDA, the UK version of Walmart – you’ll run into a pile of Potter books.
Ready for the negative spin? We’ll, there’s none. How delighted Casey and I were to walk the streets of Bristol and see people of all ages clutching their beloved Potter books. Who cares if JK Rowling tells tall tales of kids and the power of ooobie-doobie magic? She’s motivated them to read. Just a few weeks back, we visited Lacock Abbey and discovered that it was the film site for classroom scenes in the first Harry Potter. Kids skipped throughout the cloisters and peered through the colonnades in sheer bliss.
England is steeped in this kind of magic and full of so many surprises it’d take a lifetime to sort it all out, so we’ll have to come back. After all, nothing will keep people from traveling to this small, magical island - to places like London or Liverpool. Got that, Voldemort?
