Sioux City, California

Had an opportunity to visit Sioux and Kelly in California last week, and what a relaxing trip it was. I lived in Orange County for 13 years and it seems like a lifetime ago, so much so that I'd forgotten just how beautiful it was, and is: its golden, filtered light, the chocolately, textured mountains, and the glorious ocean filled with blaze orange Garibaldis and kelp forests so thick you'd get lost in that strange and mysterious underworld. Too bad some of the cheapest townhomes in Laguna Niguel cost around $650,000.

We spent most of our time in Palm Desert, where my older and wiser sister, Sioux (Sue) lives. Took a tour of the laboratory where she works as a radiology nurse, and I realized just how big Sioux's brain must be to digest this copious technical information. She offered to take us out to dinner with a gift certificate she received. Who gave that to you, Sue? Oh, just some guy whose life I saved.

Mom and Dad will appreciate some of the photos of medical implements below; that is, when and if Dad gets into gear and joins the information superhighway.

Below: Sue holding a stent for heart surgery. She refused to give it to me as a parting gift; apparently, this wouldn't be ethical, not to mention that it costs several thousand dollars.

Device used for vertebroplasty, a procedure used to strengthen a broken vertebra. Mom had this procedure right after our family trip to Norway.

The genuis at work, unwilling to give me free medical stuff.
